About the Property

What Avanti The Bear Den is, who it is for, and how it differs from other wildlife experiences.

What is Avanti The Bear Den?

Avanti The Bear Den is a USDA-licensed private wildlife sanctuary and cabin experience in Crown Point, Indiana, one hour southeast of Chicago. The property is home to three permanent resident animals: Avanti the black bear, Bonnie and Clyde the mute swans, and Ethel the elk. One private cabin on the grounds accommodates up to four guests at a time. No other visitors are present during a stay. It is the only private overnight accommodation at a USDA-licensed wildlife sanctuary within one hour of Chicago.

What makes Avanti The Bear Den different from a zoo?

A zoo is a public facility with general admission, high visitor volume, and typically dozens of managed species. Avanti The Bear Den is private, licensed, and accessible to one group of guests at a time. There are three permanent resident animals and one cabin. There are no exhibit signs, no public shows, and no crowds. The experience is the opposite of a zoo in almost every respect.

Is Avanti The Bear Den an ethical place to visit?

The animals at Avanti The Bear Den are permanent residents that cannot safely live in the wild. They are not captured from wild populations for the purpose of exhibition. They are cared for under USDA federal oversight. The cabin experience is built around their welfare, not the other way around. Whether a visit feels ethical is a personal judgment. The facts of the operation are available on this site and verifiable through the USDA.

Who is this experience for?

Avanti The Bear Den is for guests who want a genuinely private, nature-immersive stay. Couples, small families, and groups of friends up to four people. People who are curious about wildlife and want more than a drive-through safari or a zoo visit. People who are looking for a stay that is both comfortable and uncommon. It is not suited to guests seeking resort amenities, large-group gatherings, or a high-volume tourist attraction.

For a full account of what a stay involves hour by hour, read the experience page.

The Animals

Safety, interaction, photography, and what to expect from Avanti, Bonnie and Clyde, and Ethel during your stay.

Is it safe to be near Avanti the black bear?

Avanti does not interact directly with guests. Guests observe him at a scheduled feeding from outside his habitat. No guest enters Avanti's habitat at any point during a stay. The encounter is structured, supervised, and consistent with the USDA Animal Welfare Act standards that govern the facility. Thousands of visits to bear sanctuaries take place in the United States each year under similar federal frameworks. Safety at Avanti The Bear Den is a function of the structure of the encounter, not proximity.

Can guests interact with the animals?

Bonnie and Clyde the mute swans are the only resident animals that guests interact with directly. Guests may hand feed them at the pond. Feeding instructions are provided before the encounter. Avanti the black bear is observed at a scheduled feeding but does not take food from guests and does not make direct contact with guests. Ethel the elk is observed at a natural distance as she moves through the property grounds. No guest touches Avanti or Ethel. Avanti is approximately 20 years old, Clyde is 12, Bonnie is one year old, and Ethel is approximately 30, the oldest of the resident species.

Can guests photograph or film the animals?

What happens during Avanti's hibernation? Can guests still visit?

Avanti hibernates from approximately December through February. During those months, he is not visible and the bear feeding encounter does not take place. The cabin is available year-round. Bonnie and Clyde the mute swans and Ethel the elk are present and visible throughout the year. A winter stay offers a different experience: two resident animals rather than three, quieter grounds, and a different character to the property. Guests who specifically want to observe Avanti should book between March and November.

Are there other animals on the property besides the three residents?

Yes. White-tailed deer, wild turkeys, and coyotes move through the property grounds regularly. None of these animals are managed, fed, or part of the structured guest experience. Their presence is incidental. Most guests encounter them at dawn and dusk. The property sits within working Indiana woodland, and the wild animal activity on the grounds is a natural extension of that setting.

The USDA License

What the federal license means, what it requires, and how it differs from other forms of wildlife facility certification.

What does the USDA Animal Welfare Act license mean for guests?

The USDA Animal Welfare Act license means that the housing, feeding, veterinary care, and exhibition of every animal at Avanti The Bear Den meets federal standards enforced by the United States Department of Agriculture. It means the facility has been physically inspected and found compliant. It means the owner is accountable to federal law for the welfare of Avanti, Bonnie, Clyde, and Ethel. For guests, it means the animals they are observing are cared for under a binding federal framework, not a self-declared standard.

Is Avanti The Bear Den inspected by the government?

Yes. As a USDA-licensed facility under the Animal Welfare Act, Avanti The Bear Den is subject to inspection by USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service officials. Inspections evaluate animal housing, feeding, veterinary records, and compliance with federal care standards. The property has maintained its license continuously since [USDA-LICENSE-DATE]. Compliance is not optional and is not self-reported.

Is the USDA license the same as AZA accreditation?

No. AZA, the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, is a voluntary accreditation program for zoos and aquariums. AZA accreditation is not a federal requirement. The USDA Animal Welfare Act license is a federal legal requirement for facilities that exhibit regulated animals to the public. Avanti The Bear Den holds a USDA AWA license, which is the federal regulatory standard for this type of facility. AZA accreditation is relevant to zoos. Avanti The Bear Den is not a zoo.

Does the USDA license mean the animals are rescued?

Not necessarily. The USDA Animal Welfare Act license governs the care and exhibition of animals at regulated facilities. It does not require that the animals were rescued, and it does not restrict the origin of animals at the facility. The license speaks to how animals are cared for, not where they came from. The origin stories of Avanti, Bonnie and Clyde, and Ethel are available on their individual animal pages.
